Knarfy's Custom Weapons Battle

What is this project about?

This was such a crazy live event to pull off. For some context, I invited Knarfy to a few of my personal events for the past few months. In doing so, he got to see my work and my creativity. After my Custom Weapons video, he asked if he could branch off from that topic for his own video and have me be part of the production team.

From the get-go, it was such a great experience. Everyone on the team helped so much to make this idea come to life. Shoutout to Captonium, Ferit & NatureOfGaming! But this event involved a lot of planning and logic concerns.

  1. You need a server that will be able to handle over 150 players at all times, and that's ignoring the fact that each of the custom weapons need to be visually appealing, which usually means entities are involved- uh ohhh.

  2. You need to have textures and models for each custom weapon and decide what each custom weapon's backend item will be. For example, the honey blaster could've been a bow, paper, etc, and depending on what the backend item is, that can drastically change how the weapon performs in battle as well as what is needed for texture and model requirements.

  3. You need time to test, more importantly, you need people to test. Thankfully, Knarfy's fanbase loves all of his crazy creations and was easily able to fill that gap for us.

  4. You need a build. A crazy cool build that still boggles my mind till this day. You can find pictures of it below.

  5. And lastly, you need a developer to code, test, bug fix, and perfect the experience for both players and creators.


Weapon Display

Now, to the cool stuff. Each weapon had to be completely unique and visually pleasing to make a cool video. The base ideas were the easy part. Knarfy chose 8 of his community member's ideas to test which one would be the best in a PvP event.

Here's our starting lineup:

Egg Minigun | Given to the Orange Team and led by Coolment

The Egg Minigun is a fast-paced egg launching (almost) machine gun. It fires eggs at incredibly fast speeds and damages opponents by 6HP. None of these values are true damage, meaning armor and enchantments can impact the final damage value. For development, I decided it would be cool if you had to actively hold down on the firing button to keep the eggs shooting. It worked very well!

Comically Large Baseball Bat | Given to the Red Team and led by Fundy

This is by far the funniest weapon I created. The second I was told it would be an oversized baseball bat, my mind immediately went to the old WII Sports baseball game where hitting a homerun would broadcast "Home Run!" So, after some digging, I found those sound effects and matched them up. In order to make the baseball bat fair to other weapons, I needed to give it a drawback. Usually a drawback would be decreasing the damage it does or slightly lowering the knockback values, but for the sake of comedy it was in my best efforts to find a way around decreasing the knockback. Because what is funny about the Comically Large Baseball Bat if it doesn't shoot players over a football field away? The decided drawback is... drumroll please... A strike system! Yep, you heard me, just like real baseball, I added a 3-strikes / you're out system. Meaning if you didn't hit any players 3 times, you would INSTANTLY die. After a bit of testing we found that this was a bit too overpowered, and during our tests we saw the baseball bat team win 0 times. So we decided to make it set you to 3 hearts instead of kill you. Some other fun things about this weapon are the sound effect requirements. Based on how many entities you hit (if any) you will hear a different announcer line. For hitting entities you head "Nice shot!", for hitting over 5 entities at once you hear "Home Run!" and if you hit 0 entities, well, that's a "Strike!".

Honey Blaster | Given to the Purple Team and led by Branzy

This was a fun but simple one. By hitting right-click once, you will be slowed whilst firing a stream of honey-related objects. Honey combs, honey blocks, even honeycomb blocks. Each projectile did 5HP of damage. To make up for not being able to cancel your firing rate mid-attack, I decided to make projectiles shot by the Honey Blaster heal your teammates if hit. This made for an interesting dynamic that, honestly, felt underused.

Light Sword | Given to the Cyan Team and led by SystemZee

Contrary to popular belief, this is indeed just a renamed Lightsaber. Although it looks really sick, it does not slice through blocks. But that's because I made it block all incoming projectiles by slicing them in half with a cool animation. The Light Sword does the same damage as a Diamond Sword. Although this weapon was great in close-ranged fights, as well as blocking ranged attacks, you couldn't keep anyone in the border due to it's lack of ranged attacked. To add to that, naturally fans who enjoy playing in chaotic events may not be as skilled in PvP as your active PvP Community might be.

Fish Gun | Given to the Pink Team and led by That Chief Guy

This was a super funny weapon. Treated just like a bow, the Fish Gun launched three fish where you are aiming. To increase the deadliness of the fish, not only do they do 6HP if they hit a player, but they also explode after 1 second if you miss a player. Because this weapon felt like it was at a disadvantage, I also gave it a chance to shoot a pufferfish as one of the fishes, meaning only enemies would be poisoned if stood nearby.

Sharp Book | Given to the Blue Team and led by Wisp

Now I'll be honest here, we did not get to test this weapon as much as I would've liked to. The original concept for the Sharp Book was 3 fire-able paper pages that did piercing damage to any entity it hit on the way. This weapon easily became super strong due to it's high directional knockback and it's piercing capabilities. But, don't forget that you only have 3 ammo that restock over 9 seconds. During those 9 seconds you can really only run. Because of this 9 seconds of downtime and only 3 ammo, we decided it would be best to give them another attack method if in close ranged combat. So by melee attacking a player with a book (that has ammo), you deal 6HP per hit. Yeah, scary.

Block Thrower | Given to the Green Team and led by Mogswamp

The Block Thrower was by far one of the coolest to make. It allowed you to pick up nearly any block in the arena and send it flying through enemies until it lands. To add to that, some blocks had special properties, lava would create lava source block when it lands, and TNT would fuse when thrown. Because this weapon was a bit too all-or-nothing, I decided to allow you to hit players with it whilst holding a block. Meaning throwing it may not always be your best option. This custom weapon became deadly during border close. The ability to force someone to be outside of the border is super powerful.

Lemoninator | Given to the Yellow Team and led by Laf (yours truly)

The Lemoninator was a ton of fun. Similar to the Egg Minigun, the overall concept was the same, launch lemons at high speeds to deal damage towards your enemies. But to give them a noticeable difference, I increased the cooldown in return of allowing players to eat the lemons used as ammo. So instead of a 9 second cooldown, it now had an 18 second cooldown but allowed you to gain speed 2 for a few seconds and regeneration for a few seconds.

Overall, this was an amazing event to host and I can only imagine the cool things we'll be doing in the future. Thanks for reading!
